Tajikistan is a natural adventure playground, its mountains, rivers, and lakes ideally suited to sports and active travel. In addition to trekking and mountaineering, there are plenty of opportunities for mountain biking, paragliding, rafting and many other activities
Alpinism is one of the most popular sports tourism in Tajikistan. There are several high mountains, including Ismoil Somoni Peak (formerly Peak Communism), which at 7,495m is the highest peak in Central Asia. There are also many lower, more accessible mountains, such as Margozora Peak, which are better suited to beginner climbers.
Mountain biking is increasingly popular in Tajikistan. There are many tracks of varying difficulty which attract both professionals and enthusiasts, and it is possible to hire good quality bikes from specialist tour operators. For fans of extreme sports, there are suitable locations for paragliding, rock climbing, and base jumping, too.
Along the Vakhsh and Panj Rivers there are places for white water rafting and kayaking. Depending on the season, you can hunt and fish; and in the winter, you can ski and snowboard. There is a small ski resort at Safed Dara, within easy reach of Dushanbe, and and there numerous possibilities for backcountry skiing across the country.
